The changing relationship between PE and sport has been overshadowed by the ERA (Murdoch, 1990) but there are now closer links which will continue to maintain the standard of participation in sport. The National Curriculum will ensure that pupils start from a wide base of six activity groupings in the primary years to end of key stage 2 and at least four activities until the age of 14 (key stage 3), instead of the common practice of a narrower base in the early years leading to a wide number of options beyond age 14.
