The English Della Cruscan tuition, even though its nucleus used to be shaped in 1785 via the e-book of The Florence Miscellany, existed neither within the awareness of the crowd which shaped it nor in that of the pu blic till it was once so dubbed as a time period of reproach via William Gifford in his sour satire The Baviad (1791). As has already been pointed out Merry, the chief of the gang, claimed to be a member of the true Accademia Fiorentina which had swallowed up the Crusca and the 2 different Floren tine Academies in 1783; however it was once no longer till the summer time of 1787, while in the course of his lingering voyage of go back to England he started to ship his contributions signed "Della Crusca" to the area, that the identify grew to become publicly recognized or maybe hired through his associates. Merry makes use of it of himself in a letter to Mrs. Piozzi after his arrival in England, on twenty seventh February, 1788. 1 His public avowal of his romantic craving after the suppressed Accademia della Crusca seems to be at the title-page of his Paulina (1787); for while at the title-page of Robert Manners (1785) he for the 1st time calls himself "A Member of the Royal Academy of Florence," the writer of Paulina, "Robert Merry, Esq.

Elsewhere, Merry's Song ("When Winter chills the dreary plain")! though not a translation, is wholly in the Metastasian manner, and shows how much he had absorbed the sentiments if not the style of the master.

For a description of it see Chapter 4 of this book. THE BACKGROUND 35 cannot be overlooked in the seventeen-eighties, this is not the case of France, which after giving Voltaire, the rationalist, and Rousseau, the romantic idealist, to the world, stopped short by 1770 when the work of both was done. Walking down those little-known side-roads of the last years of the pre-revolutionary period we find few poets who appear to have any affinities with the new movement. Not that it is a question ofa change ofliterary form which one seeks, for as we shall see, the Della Cruscans clung to a thoroughly conservative system of verse-form and even in many cases of poetical diction, but in this French poetry there seems either no realisation of the urgency of change, or a refusal to face it.

3 Patch was in every way a different kind of man. That pug-faced, modern Silenus, who died so regrettably in 1782, only a year or so before the arrival of Merry and his friends, or no doubt they would have figured in his conversation pieces, appears sometimes as a bust, sometimes as an oil-painting in the backgrounds of his own pictures, mocking the posturing caricatures of the cream of English Florentine society. The man who was forced to leave the Papal States for some unknown crime, who was always involved in difficulties because of his tongue, had a clear eye for the silly comedy that much of social life is.
