15 In early August 1886, thirteen years after the government survey, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad began work on a rail line that was to stretch southward from Arkansas City, Kansas, down the center of the unassigned lands and into Texas. By the end of September the construction teams had completed a bridge over the Arkansas River, and more than 5,000 workers joined in pushing the enterprise into the present state of Oklahoma. Through the empty land the railroad came, with track being laid at a rate of more than two miles a day.
